THE BRIEF

A Stage for Everyone

The theater’s existing visual identity was outdated, difficult to read, and not memorable. It failed to reflect the theater’s values or community-focused spirit of the space.

The new identity for Teatro di Cestello draws from its name, cestello, meaning “basket” in Italian. The basket symbolizes gathering and inclusion, reflecting the theater’s role as a space that brings people together.

The logo creates a flexible foundation across different materials. The color palette takes inspiration from the theater’s vibrant interior, bringing warmth to the identity. Together, these elements create a brand that celebrates community, diverse voices, and shared experiences. It is scalable across advertising and merchandise and simultaneously attracts new audiences while also strengthening its place in the local neighborhood.

THE PROCESS

Reading Between the Lines

I struggled to find a starting point because the theater lacked a strong visual identity. How do you build something meaningful when there’s barely anything to work off? But those limitations became opportunities. By paying attention to the theater’s quirks and charm, I designed a brand identity that felt like it belonged, not just to the theater, but also to the community that cherishes it.

This project taught me that creativity isn’t always about starting with a big idea, but recognizing potential in what’s already there. By observing the theater, its people, and its story, I learned that authenticity comes from leaning into existing character to create an identity that feels meaningful and at home.
